The base is black walnut.  It came from a storm damaged tree at least 75 years old which died and I collected in 1992.  That piece – one of a dozen – has been waiting to be sculpted for over 30 years.  \u003cbr\u003e\n… I have arbitrarily called one side the “front,” but it is fascinating from all sides.  The beautiful grain and color mosaic of this salvaged ocean driftwood came from a tree branch that was 8” diameter and over 10 foot long.  It had obviously been beaten and tossed around in the ocean for several years before I found it stranded on an Oregon beach.  \u003cbr\u003e\n… Some of the 27.8\" tall x 10.6\" wide x 10.6’’ deep, 9 lbs. 15 oz sculpture’s rustic exterior has been preserved to add character to the art.  \u003cbr\u003e\n… This large awe-inspiring twisting and flared driftwood sculpture is so unique it is almost impossible to describe. If you have specific questions, you are welcome to email me:  rcpaulson@msn.com.  \u003cbr\u003e---------------------------------------------------------\u003cbr\u003eAbout mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius) -- a typical tree is shown above.   \u003cbr\u003eThis evergreen North American species of mountain mahogany is called curl-leaf mountain mahogany (in the rose family, Rosaceae).  It has dark, hard, beautifully grained, dense and heavy wood, which makes it one of my all-time favorites for creating beautiful art pieces.  These trees can live over 1,300 years, so it is one of the longest lived flowering plants (not related to the tropical mahoganies).  \u003cbr\u003eCurl-leaf mountain mahogany lives across much of the dry Western United States and in Baja California in Mexico, and is found at elevations ranging from 800 to 9,800 ft.  It prefers shallow, well-drained and rocky soils with a sandy or grainy consistency, and is generally found in areas that receive only 6-9 inches annual moisture.  It is found on low mountains and rocky, rugged almost cliff-like slopes, where it grows in scattered groves among other drought-resistant species such as pinyon pines, junipers and sagebrush.\u003cbr\u003eCercocarpus ledifolius is a large, densely branching tree which can reach heights of 35 ft, although it is not uncommon to find the adult plant acting like a shrub as short as 3 ft.  Its leathery, sticky, dark green leaves are up to 1.6 inches long and lance-shaped, and the edges may curl under. The flower consists of a small tan tube from which protrudes a long, plume-like style covered in luxuriant tan hairs. The flowers are arranged in inflorescences of up to 3.
